Facebook is a huge social network. With over 140 million users, if you ask any highschool student or college student if the they use the social networking site, they will most likely say yes. How did Facebook get to be this big? Can you look at how it did and use this to make your site better?
I haven’t tried it yet, but a new WordPress extension (note how I call it an extension – it is a series of plugins that will transform your WordPress installation) called BuddyPress will you to create a social network from your WordPress installation.
Web 2.0 is big. It is the biggest thing since maybe… Web 1.0? We will go over why Web 2.0 is so big. You could probably use this information to say… get rich with a new Web 2.0 site? :]
Starting a new community is hard. Different from starting say, a blog, you have to have a user population that comes back. With something like a blog, people can read a few articles, click on an advertisement maybe, possibly tell their friends, and then they are done with your site. It is great if you have users that come back to your blog, but it isn’t necessary. With forums, this is absolutely necessary.
Which matters more: the number of queries, or the quality of queries? Would running 10,000 small queries, each grabbing one row, be faster than running one query to grab 10,000 rows, and then selecting the rows when they are needed?
