Using the HeadSpace2 Plugin

Part two of the Full Guide to WordPress SEO is an in-depth guide on how to use the WordPress plugin HeadSpace2. HeadSpace2 is a plugin designed to optimize the SEO of your WordPress blog. It mainly focuses on the meta tags of the blog.

Overall, the main purpose of HeadSpace2 is to optimize the meta tags of your blog. This is an aspect of SEO, and will raise your search engine rankings.

  1. Install the plugin. The first thing that you should do is install the plugin. I talked about a simple way to install a plugin in the first entry in the Full Guide to WordPress SEO. You can find (better) documentation on how to install a plugin here.
  2. Move to the HeadSpace2 settings page. This is where you will make most of the changes to the settings of the plugin (pretty obvious, huh?). It should look like this:
    headspace1
  3. Change a few meta tags. Each of the bars going across is a type of page that you can change the meta tags for. I just kept it simple and did:
    headspace5
This way the title of the page would appear before the title of the site. This is important because words that come first in the title of a page have more weight than words that come later when search engines index them.
  4. Enable More text. This is probably my favorite feature of HeadSpace2. You can enable the changing of the More text to make it more interesting. Head over to the Page Modules section of HeadSpace2 settings and drag the More text up.
    headspace2
Now you can change the More text on any post. It will look like this:
    headspace3
This should increase the number of clicks on the More text, and the number of people that read your articles.
  5. Continue tweaking. I just gave you a few examples of things that you can do with HeadSpace2, but the options are unlimited. You can configure each page individual to show the meta tags that you want. As your site changes, keep your meta tags updated and shown correctly with HeadSpace2.

  1. I guess this is where I begin hating Headspace 2.Do you put something here, not fill in something there? Should you put a description here and there? Too many variables. Too many ways to make a mistake and kill the SEO for your site instead of boosting it.

It took me 6 months to get my site like I wanted it with no issues involved. It took Headspace less than a week to get it flagged by Google. Just not so sure about it myself.

  2. @diego

Well, it requires more configuration based on exactly what you want. This is just to get you started. Thanks for commenting.

    @Tim

I check every type of page after making changes in HeadSpace. It’s definitely very complicated, but also very powerful. I can see what you mean though. Thanks for commenting.

  3. Ok I admit that I am new to this headspace2. It sounded so good but I failed already in the tag section. No tag bar would actually appear, whether for an old blog post or a new one. I did not get any ‘automatic’ suggestion of tags or keywords. Any idea of what went wrong? and I did not find a manual or guide to it either. Listen guys I am more than happy to donate, yes, but I do not get it to work and if I cannot get it to work I cannot make any sales.

  4. i used headspace 2 carefully and believed had entered accurate data to use it properly and yet when i resubmitted my sitemap, it did not have any url index anymore.

instead of boosting my site, it did not help at all.

    Did i do anything wrong ? :(

  5. Dear Austin,

Do you think this is the best plugins for meta tags? If yes, then I must use it for my wordpress blogs. Thanks for sharing.
Recently we have listed the best SEO plugins for wordpress. You can get the list in my site and leave a comment if you think any of them are not good for SEO purpose. I will appreciate your feedback.

    Greetings from Germany,
    Hendrik

    • Hi Hendrik,

I definitely think that it’s a good plugin for SEO. It’s very powerful, though, so if it isn’t used right it can have negative effects.

      Thanks for your comment.

  6. Appreciated you article. It’s basic, but that is what I noob like me needs! I’m getting some SEO but need to fill in more boxes, without filling in the wrong ones.

To Mark Struck, if you are still around, you have to “activate” a number of the options by going to Headspace settings, go to page modules (at the very top), and *drag* the “disabled” modules up to Simple. These modules make themselves available automatically at the bottom of Pages and Posts.
