Why Mixx is better than Digg

For those who aren’t familiar with Mixx, it is a social bookmarking site similar to Digg. Despite the fact that the xx‘s are better then the gg‘s, I feel that Mixx is better than Digg.

What is Mixx?

Simply put, Mixx is a clone of Digg. (I’m not sure which came first, or which invented the idea, although I think that the idea was probably invented by neither Digg or Mixx, so you could say that Digg is Mixx clone. The difference is academic.) It is a social bookmarking site that allows users to vote for (synonym: digg) for stories, or vote against them. It works basically the same as Digg, and the categories for content aren’t much different. So how is it better?

How Mixx is superior to Digg

Mixx is better than Digg because of one reason: it’s community. First of all, Mixx’s community is more focused on serious topics (at least from what I have seen). Most of the topics fall under web development, but there are categories for other topics.  To hit the front page on Digg, you need to have a good amount of friends on Digg. How is this fair? In my opinion, social bookmarking sites like Digg or Mixx should be based on content, not popularity. On Mixx, to hit the front page you need to have content that is well created. This the way that it should be. Of course there are people on Mixx that seem to hit the front page more often than not, but there are top users in every community. Mixx’s power users at least leave some space for the average users.

On Mixx, compared to Digg, everything is scaled down. Instead of needing a couple hundred votes to hit the front page, as it is on Digg, you only need around 50. This makes it easier to hit the front page. The community on Mixx isn’t that small, and all of the users are friendly and active. You will find that you fit in on Mixx fairly well.

Does the size of Mixx affect the output?

A typical submission on Mixx has around 50 votes.

I wouldn’t say so. Just because you only need 50 votes to hit the front page doesn’t mean that you will only get 50 hits from Mixx. Of course you won’t get thousands, like you would if you hit the front page on Digg, but you will still get a traffic stream of intelligent, active users. Isn’t this the traffic that you want?

I’m not saying that you should quit Digg, because it has things to offer, but you should consider Mixx. It’s a great site that will grow to time. Hopefully it won’t develop like Digg, and it will keep the idea that the best content gets the most votes, and it doesn’t matter who submitted it (and their amount of friends).

Please note: I don’t hate Digg in any way. I think that it is a great site, and I use it often. I am just stating my opinion(s) on these two websites. You have the right to disagree.
