When will SEO die?

Search engine optimization, or SEO, won’t be around forever. It has even faded away in the last few years. When will SEO completely disappear? Why will SEO completely disappear?

Search engines are getting smarter

As time passes, search engines are getting smarter. Now, let’s remember what search engine optimization really is. When you SEO a website, you make changes to it so that a search engine will have an easier time indexing the website, therefore giving it a better ranking. There are a few other aspects of SEO, but, overall, you want the search engine indexing bot to have an easy time indexing the page. What happens when the search engine indexing bots become smarter, and they can index any page? Things like ‘keyword density’ and ‘meta tags’ are completely gone (they are already becoming less important). What will we do then?

It’s hard to tell when SEO will disappear. Search engines are becoming smarter and smarter, so it’s only a matter of time.

How will this change things?

I think that it will change things for the better. Yes, it will put SEO firms out of business, if they don’t find something else to do, but it will have many positive affects on the web. First, search will be improved. Instead of the page that is best optimized for the web showing up first on the SERP, the page with the absolute most relevant content will be first. Next, it will improve the quality of content all over the web. It will be more competitive to create quality content, now that SEO is completely gone.

This is already occuring

SEO is becoming less and less important as time goes on. PageRank? It doesn’t seem to matter. Keyword density? It worked in 1998. Meta tags? Well, we do have a new meta tag. Many companies are opting not to use the meta tag at all, though.

If you are experiencing the transition as SEO becomes less important, please tell us about it. Leave a comment talking about how this transition has affected you or your company. I look forward to hearing your stories! ;)

  1. SEO isn’t all about Page ranking and key density and Meta tags as you put it. SEO is also about content writing and key word research and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. So basically SEO is still going to be around for a while….
