New Green Day Album

After a recent failure to blog, I’ve decided that I’m going to start blogging about things other than SEO, Web 2.0, and Web Development. I’ll probably start to blog about music (like this article) every once in a while to start.

This post is a review (and a hype post) for Green Day’s new album, 21st Century Breakdown. It should be released around May, I’m looking forward to it.

The only track off of 21st Century Breakdown that I have access to is the title track. I found it on the net somewhere (I can’t link to it here), just look around. It’s only an early mix of the track that will appear on the CD, so it’s not perfect.

Green Days new album, 21st Century Breakdown, is expected in May 2009.

Green Day's new album, '21st Century Breakdown', is expected in May 2009.

The song starts off with a short piano riff that repeats over and over again. The first time that I heard the song I had the feeling ‘wow, Green Day lost it’, but that later faded away. It was just different to hear this kind of riff in a Green Day song. Don’t worry though, it gets better.

After around 20 seconds of the piano riff, the drums come in, and then the guitar. You can still hear the piano riff for a little while after that (around 10 seconds), but after that it’s basically gone. Things kick-off into a normal Green Day song. I would say that this song (at least the guitar riff) is more like pre-American Idiot Green Day.

With American Idiot, especially the title track, the songs are driven by recognizable guitar riffs. If you play the main riff of American Idiot to anyone who has heard the song a few times before (probably just about everyone), they will recognize it. This isn’t really true for pre-American Idiot songs (minus a few). That’s just my opinion.

Things basically continue. I think that the next point to mention is the solo. For those who are listening to the song, it starts at around 4:26 in my version. It’s not very long, but I love it. The song slows down as the solo begins. (I’m not very good with time signatures, so I can’t give you a musician’s point of view on the time change. I hope that ‘the song slows down’ suffices). I’m not sure why I really like the solo.

I’m pretty excited for this album. Green Day has been doing a lot since American Idiot (think: Foxboro Hot Tubs, Pinhead Gunpowder) and I think that it’s great that ‘Green Day’ as we know it is back.

You can read more about the album at a few places: MTV’s Preview, First Listen, and Rolling Stone’s Article. Thanks for reading!
