Welcome Back

Things are finally back up. Here’s a few things about what went wrong and what’s new.

Welcome Back

WordPress has been on my nerves recently. It has caused good and bad.

The problem arised about a week and a half ago. My server was acting funny. It had a MySQL process that was using (on average) 97% of CPU and about 7% of RAM. This was causing everything to go horribly slow.

My server admin and I decided that it would probably be best to reinstall. This is the good part of the story: I now have 64-bit Debian Lenny. After a few hours of setting things back up (my mailserver was the worst), I decided to check on my blog to make sure things had transferred correctly.

The problem came back. I signed into WordPress admin and everything became slow again. I checked things out and the MySQL process had returned. WordPress admin wouldn’t load until I killed the process. After playing around with things for a little (I disabled all of my plugins and found that that didn’t help), I decided to just reinstall WordPress.

The install went well and I was able to recover all of my posts. My traffic took a hit. Oh well, these things happen.

I decided to redesign now that I’m using WordPress for my full site. With the past version, I was using a custom (and simple) CMS based on CakePHP for the root site (http://gulati.info) and WordPress for my blog (http://gulati.info/blog/). I decided that it would be easier to just stick to WordPress for the whole thing.

If anyone has any suggestions in regard to the design, please share. I like it, but it’s not perfect. There are still a few things that I have to do until I’d say it’s complete (such as social networking features), but it’s almost there.
